New research suggests that people with low levels of testosterone may benefit from the anti-androgenic effects of levonorgestrel.
A New Zealand study published inBritish Medical Journalhas found that men who have low levels of testosterone, or “male hormones”, may be able to benefit from the anti-androgenic effects of the drug.
The study, published in the journalNew England Journal of Medicine, was funded by Pfizer, the world’s biggest drugmaker. It was part of a larger study funded by the maker of erectile dysfunction drug Viagra.
The study involved 18,000 men who had low levels of testosterone and who had tried to get an erection by increasing the amount of semen released during sex.
Men who took levonorgestrel for five years had a 50% higher chance of getting an erection than men who did not take the drug.
But they had lower levels of testosterone, which has been associated with low testosterone levels. The study found the effects were most pronounced in men who had low levels of testosterone.

The study also found that men who had low levels of testosterone who took levonorgestrel had a 50% greater chance of getting an erection than men who did not take the drug.
“The evidence from the New Zealand study is strong and supports our findings,” Dr. Nissen said.
The study’s lead author, Dr. David Heiman, from the University of New South Wales’ School of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences, said the study’s findings “reminds us of a number of men’s sexual health concerns.”
He said that the study is important because it showed that the anti-androgenic effects of levonorgestrel are more pronounced in people who have low levels of testosterone and in those who have normal levels of testosterone.
“It is important to note that the study was funded by Pfizer, which has no ties to the drug company,” he said.
The company’s patent for levonorgestrel, called NRI, expires this month, and its patent for other ED drugs will be expiring in 2017, or 2017, or 2017 and 2019, or 2019 and 2023, the patent holder, the manufacturer of Viagra, said in a statement.
The company said it will update its patent application “with new information,” and it will provide an alternative to the study, which was funded by Pfizer.
